OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA IN THE DENTAL OFFICE FROM A’S TO ZZZZZ’S: UNDERSTANDING THE PHYSIOLOGY OF THE FASTEST GROWING DISEASE IN THE UNITED STATES AND KNOWING WHEN AND HOW TO TREAT IT EFFECTIVELY USING ORAL APPLIANCES

This lecture will provide you and your Team the following:

1. The physiology of OSA from a sleep physician’s perspective
2. Understanding why obstructive sleep apnea is so prevalent and how sleep physicians triage these patients towards certain treatment options.
3. Demonstrating the proper workflow and communication with referring physicians when using an oral appliance as a treatment option
4. Choosing the right appliance and factoring patient characteristics when selecting the overall design of the appliance
5. Knowing how to manage side effects that can be elicited by oral appliances
6. Determining efficacy of appliances and setting follow-up protocols for sleep patients

About:

Benjamin Utterback, DDS, D.ABDSM
Ben grew up in North Canton and graduated from Hoover High School and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 2000. He achieved the Diplomate status through the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine and has achieved the highest status among dentists who treat patients with sleep disordered breathing. Dr. Utterback enjoys guest lecturing for both the undergrad students at the University of Mount Union MED 100 class as well as those within the Physician Assistant program. He also lectures on effectively treating sleep apnea to several other medical and dental groups.

Ketan S. Deoras, MD, FAPA
Dr. Deoras is a sleep medicine specialists and has clinical interests in Sleep Apnea, Narcolepsy, Hypersomnia, Insomnia, Restless Leg Syndrome and REM Sleep Behavior Disorder. He attended medical school at The University of Toledo and completed a residency at the University of Arizona. He received fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic Sleep Disorders Center. Dr. Deoras is board certified in sleep medicine and psychiatry.

From Frank Avenue enter the Stark State College/KSU driveway. Make a left at the top of the driveway and follow the ring road to the parking in front of the “Gateway Center” and “Business & Entrepreneurial Building.” Visitor Parking is directly in front of the building. Enter through Door M2.
